Frequently asked questions
What does a negative result mean?
The value decreased. −20% means the new value is 20% lower than the original.
Is this the same as percentage difference?
No. Percentage change needs a defined starting point. Percentage difference compares two values without treating either as the original.
What if the original value is zero?
Percentage change is undefined — you cannot divide by zero.
Can it exceed 100%?
Yes. If a value doubles, the change is 100%. If it triples, it is 200%.
How do I reverse a percentage change?
Divide the new value by (1 + change/100). $120 after a 20% increase → original was $100.
